Haitians here in Houston are doing what they can to get supplies to those affected by yesterday's earthquake.

A donation drive kicked off Wednesday at the Multi-Ethnic Community Center in southwest Houston. It didn't take long to fill the center with donations from Houstonians.

So many people at the center have yet to hear from their loved ones in Haiti and they're doing what they can to turn their restless energy into action.

"I didn't sleep. I stayed up watching the news," said Thomas Rosemond.

Rosemond is trying to answer the same question most are pondering at the headquarters of the Haitian Multicultural Association and that is if his loved ones survived yesterday's major earthquake.

"I have family. I have sister. I have brother-in-law. I have niece. I have cousin," he said. "I have a lot of people in the capital of Port au Prince."

In the absence of answers, they are putting their energy into relief efforts.

"We wanted to see definite materials, such as relief efforts, the medical, the first aid, the non-perishable food items, the clothing, the water, the food, those kinds of things being brought here," said Max Alexandre with the Haitian Multi-Cultural Association. "And they have been."

As soon as the association put the call out, the Haitian community of Houston began to mobilize.

"I brought some clothes, some shoes and some blankets," said donating Houstonian Charles Leeper.

Many showed up, not only with clothes and water, but well wishes.

"We shouldn't have too much to complain about because people like that right now, they go through more stuff then we do," said Shavaria Collins, who is donating to Haitian victims. "Basically, we're blessed and those people are hurting bad."

You can drop off supplies at 9819 Bissonnet from 7am to 10pm today through Friday. On Friday, they plan to hold a vigil for the victims.
