Local company making replacement eslate machines

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- We got an inside look at how thousands of e-slate voting machines will be replaced by going to a plant in Sugar Land where they are made.

You'll remember that 10,000 voting machines were damaged in a fire in northeast Houston last month. The county has been looking to replace them.

Suntron is working on machines for the upcoming election. They're building 2,200 units for Harris County. The process usually takes about six months to get all the materials together, but they were able to put a rush on things.

"Necessity is the mother of invention. This just shows what we can do when we put our collective heads together," said Bob Halverson, Suntron Plant Manager.

They're starting to ship the machines this afternoon. The county is also planning to borrow additional machines from surrounding counties.
