City of Houston honors TSU football team

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Tiger nation took over downtown Houston today as the city honored Texas Southern University's football team.

The city honored TSU for winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference title Saturday. The Tigers beat Alabama State University 11-6 to win their first SWAC title in 42 years. TSU started the season 1-3 then ran off eight straight wins to win the conference championship.

City Councilwoman Wanda Adams presented proclamations to the team during a celebration held at City Hall at noon. Mayor Annise Parker and other members of the Houston City Council also attended.

"It means a lot. It means that people recognize your hard work and dedication. You know it's good for our student athletes and our university," said TSU Head Coach Johnnie Cole.

"I'm very proud, very excited, very happy to be here, you know, see everybody come out to take part in this day," said TSU player Fred Gaines.

The Tigers last won the SWAC in 1968 when they shared the conference title with Alcorn State and Grambling.
