Ex-officer sentenced to 20 years for theft

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A retired Houston police officer will spend 20 years behind bars for stealing more than $600,000 meant to help fellow officers.

Matthew Calley apologized to the court during sentencing on Friday. Calley plead guilty back in March to two felony counts of theft and misappropriations of funds. Prosecutors say he stole the money over a seven-year period while serving on the board of the Houston Police Officers' Union.

"The truly sad part about this is that the money he stole was from a fund setup to help officers in need," said Harris County Asst. District Attorney Matthew Peneguy.

Calley was sentenced to 20 years on each count, but will serve his sentences concurrently.

Prosecutors don't expect the money stolen from the police union to ever be recouped.
