HOUSTON (KTRK) -- In an emotional moment, the survivor of a fiery crash on the Beltway, for the first time Friday, met the stranger who saved her, and Eyewitness News was there for the encounter.
A walking, breathing, living angel, Nancy Decker would say, walked through her front door Friday.
"Thank you so much," Decker told Staff Sgt. Mitchell Corbin.
"You're very welcome," he replied.
Decker was in a precarious position two weeks ago. She lost control near the toll plaza. Her car rolled and the smoke would soon turn to flames.
While bystanders waited firefighters, Staff Sgt. Corbin charged ahead, his training taking control. He smashed her window out with a fire extinguisher and pulled the mother and grandmother her from the wreckage.
"All the airbags were deployed and I didn't know if I would be able to get to you. And you just reached your hands up and that's when I grabbed you and we got you out of there," Corbin told her.
"I don't remember any of that. Actually, I don't remember the last seven miles of my driving," she said.
As soon as Decker was out of the car, it burst into flames.
Corbin, who is stationed at Ellington Field, cared for her until paramedics arrived and then he left.
And embracing her hero for the first time brings tears of joy; a hero, who says he just knew he had to do something.
"You have no idea, you have no idea what you've done for me. You've given me a second chance with my family and with my life and I will be forever grateful," she told Corbin.
Decker suffered a concussion and a broken heal.
Corbin is a staff sergeant and a member of the 147th Reconnaissance Wing of the Texas Air National Guard at Ellington.
