Pregnant woman killed crossing street, doctors deliver baby

  

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A pregnant woman was killed while crossing a street, but doctors may have been able to save her unborn baby.

The accident happened at about 9:20am Tuesday in the 6300 block of Main. Police say the woman, who's been identified as 30-year-old Jennifer Young, was trying to cross the street at the intersection of Main and Cambridge.

As Young crossed the street, a gray Acura MDX, traveling south on Main, had the green light. A vehicle next to the Acura stopped in the middle of the intersection and the Acura continued forward, hitting the victim.

Young was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where her unborn child was delivered by emergency surgery. The baby remains in critical condition.

The driver of the Acura was questioned and released at the scene. The investigation continues.

Young was a teacher at Rice University. According to university officials, she taught computational and applied mathematics. She had been working at the university for two years.
