Officials rescue kids stranded by high water in NW Harris County

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Heavy rain fell all across our viewing area on Thursday. In northwest Harris County, some people needed a little help to get to dry land.

According to the Harris County Flood Control District, the Cy Fair Fire Department performing high water rescues along Schiel Road near Mueschke, not far from the outlet mall on Highway 290.

Children at a baseball day camp got a little more than expected. Usually, their camp lasts six hours, but on Thursday it was nine hours long. They were among the 37 people who were rescued in the area.

It took at least three boat trips to get the children, instructors and fathers stranded at Sandlot Sports to safety. SkyEye HD was overhead and we were on the ground as they came in. Some were excited, others a little apprehensive, but all happy to be dry.

"I was just hoping I didn't have to swim," day camper Sara Porter said.

Little Cypress Creek swallowed Mueschke Road and it only got worse as the day dragged on.

"It was starting to get really high yesterday and it just kept raining," stranded resident Julius Jefferson said.

So it was time for 16-year-old Jefferson to grab his dog, Chloe, and head out.

"We just decided that we can't leave him there, and the water gets higher. We were just glad to get him out," said his father, Mark Jefferson.

But walking wasn't an option for the kids across the street at the Sandlot Sports day camp.

We hopped on an airboat piloted by Harris County Sheriff's Major Mark O'Brien to see the flooded homes, stranded cows, submerged 18-wheelers and the island the kids spent their day on.

"I thought I was just going to have fun at the place but then the flood came," day camper Tyler Boyle said.

"It didn't seem like it was going to be this bad," mother Laura Williams said.

Fifteen children ages 5 to 12 got a full day of baseball and then some. They were among the dozens rescued along Mueschke by Cy-Fair volunteer firefighters and Harris County deputies. The only difference is they walk away with a lot more energy.

"Plenty of Kit Kats and Doritos and Monster and Coke so they're all in good shape," father Matt Minchich said.

Mueschke Road remained closed Thursday night. Several people opted out evacuating the area and the water hadn't receded much by Thursday night. But everyone there is hoping for little rain Friday.
