In Crosby, a high school football player who died because of a heart condition is being honored.

Cody Stephens died in his sleep of hypercardiomyopathy in May. His school in Crosby retired his number -- 76 -- during a halftime ceremony at Friday night's game.

Playing sports didn't necessarily contribute to Stephens' death, but a medical test given to some Texas athletes could have prevented it.

Echocardiograms catch 80 percent of cases, and Stephens' father is campaigning to have the UIL require the test.

Crosby Independent School District plans to start giving students echocardiograms in April. They cost roughly $25 per student.
