HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Fire broke out at a northwest Harris County apartment complex early this morning, leaving residents with almost nothing. And now, they're trying to figure out a way to pick up and get out of the cold.
More than six dozen firefighters were called out to the three-alarm fire at the Nantucket Square townhomes on Kuykendahl near Place Rebecca Lane.
"It's just sad to come home to something like this," said resident Ben Sennett.
As emergency crews arrived, the problem became intense. It quickly escalated to a three-alarm fire. Many neighbors and pets were forced to evacuate into the cold.
"I don't have any water or electricity," said resident Leslie Hughes. "I came and got into my car because it's so cold."
Investigators say it appears the accidental fire may have started under a tenant's stairwell. They say a man smelled something burning and tried to put out the flames, but it became too dangerous so he had to run out and warn his neighbors about the fire.
Investigators say the fire totally destroyed two units and caused moderate damage to three others
Some tenants told us the wind was a major factor that caused a greater scare as crews from across the area rushed to put out the fire.
"It was blowing embers throughout everything you could see," said resident Moses Saldana. "You could see the embers flying with the flames. The wind was definitely whipping this fire."
No one was injured in the fire, however firefighters did have to give one man's dog oxygen.
