PASADENA, TX (KTRK) -- Firefighters have extinguished a fire at a natural gas storage facility near Pasadena that burned for most of Tuesday morning and led to evacuations.
At about 9am, a fire occurred in a glycol re-boiler unit at Kinder Morgan's West Clear Lake natural gas storage facility at 5200 Genoa Red Bluff Road in Harris County, near Pasadena. According to the company, workers shut down, isolated and secured the unit involved and the facility. There has been no release of natural gas.
A volunteer company from the Pasadena Fire Department arrived on the scene, coordinating with Kinder Morgan personnel to extinguish the fire, and Channel Industries Mutual Aid assisted in the response.
A Kinder Morgan statement says there are no injuries reported, and no evacuations or a shelter in place have been ordered, according to emergency responders at the facility. But Dave Brannon with the Pasadena Fire Department earlier said officials evacuated a neighborhood on the south side of the leak, and issued a shelter in place order. Emergency responders temporarily blocked portions of Genoa Red Bluff Road in the vicinity of the plant.
The Pasadena Fire Department says the fire was extinguished at around 1:15pm and the shelter in place order was lifted, allowing residents to return to their homes.
Glycol is an organic compound widely use for anti-freeze for vehicle use. Glycol is used in natural gas processing to remove water from natural gas.
