Heights residents say nearby church is too loud

  

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A church in the Heights says it's following scripture by making 'a joyful noise to the Lord,' but some residents say the sound is anything but joyful. In fact, at least one man calls it 'racket.'

Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church has been a fixture on Herkimer Street for nearly a century. Its current building is more than 60 years old and the church is in the process of building a new sanctuary.

However some residents say the sounds of construction early in the morning plus the church's noise outside of Sunday service is a bit extreme.

Residents have called the police on the church multiple times but some people feel like their neighbors are being a little too sensitive.

"There are no deed restrictions here," said resident David Trang. "I think you should leave the church alone and just let people worship how they want to worship."

"I would say the biggest thing is construction particularly on Saturdays and also there have been times where there has been a pretty good amount of racket," said resident Bristol Baxley.

The pastor of the church says once the construction is complete, their new building will contain extra insulation to buffer the sounds.
