Hail falls across southeast Texas as storms move through

Wednesday, March 20, 2013
Damage was widespread in the small town of Brookshire early this morning from severe weather that moved through the area.

Residents in the small town of Brookshire are picking up the pieces after some wild weather moved through southeast Texas this morning.

The hail started in Brookshire just after 2:30am and within minutes, it was more than six inches deep in some places. Entire yards were blanketed and power went out in 50 percent of homes in the area.

Windows were shattered and cars were smashed and dented. Some homes had vinyl siding barely hanging on and as the sun came up the damage became more clear.

"I hear kaboom, kaboom! So, I opened the door because I thought it was the rain," said resident Michelle Clark. "When I opened that door, all of that hail started hitting me in my head. I closed the door, ran to my restroom and I called my mama."

Law enforcement officials began going door-to-door with a warning.

"We want to go around and advise everyone just to stay inside and please make sure you stay away from the windows. Try to make sure you get to a designated area," said Fire Chief Lyndon Stamps with the Brookshire Fire Department.

There were no reported injuries. But many came close to getting seriously hurt.

The hail broke through the glass, the screen, and the blinds, getting inside one home.

"We are very, very blessed that it wasn't coming from the other way, something could have easily happened to both of us," said resident Julie Gomez.

Residents have begun the cleanup process.

"We have four small children in the house and they need to get it fixed for the babies," said resident Cathy Young.

"I have never been that scared before in my life like I was this morning," Clark said. "It was something serious, man. It was a disaster."

Police are still patrolling the areas affected by the storm. They say all of the debris can sometimes be even more dangerous than the storm so they are urging residents to hurry up and clean up around their homes.
