New Planned Parenthood location upsets some

Friday, May 03, 2013

A new Planned Parenthood has moved into a neighborhood in Spring and not everyone is welcoming the services they offer. In fact, some are promising weekly protests.

This Planned Parenthood clinic opened last week. It replaces an old location on FM1960 which has operated in the area since 1992. But there are a lot of people who live and work around the new location who say it's is not an appropriate place for the clinic.

"I don't think that Planned Parenthood represents the values of me, or the values of most people in this area," said protester Nolan Conley.

Planned Parenthood's newest clinic on Louetta at Kuykendahl is drawing a lot of attention.

"To kill an innocent baby is wrong," Conley said.

The new clinic is walking distance from multiple Klein schools, and in the same shopping center as a daycare and Glenn Mehterian's family-owned party supply store. And they all want it gone from what they call a "family friendly" environment.

Mehterian of Cool Kat Party Supply said, "Planned Parenthood has one business model that I don't feel is conducive to our business model."

Planned Parenthood has seven Houston-area locations. A spokesperson says the northwest-side clinic, formerly on FM1960, is the third-most visited, serving more than 10,000 women last year. This new location provides them the bigger space they need.

"They should have a Planned Parenthood on every corner," said supporter Roxie Ababon. "It's for the best of women that don't want children and make mistakes."

The biggest mistake, for Mehterian, is Planned Parenthood's latest location. So he's moving his main door farther from it.

"We'll have more comfort entering our store from the Kroger side," he said.

Different groups hold prayer vigils here four days a week. Planned Parenthood is aware and says despite the opposition, they've been "very welcomed and plan to be a successful health center in the community."
