Suspect wanted for shootings commits suicide in Webster after daylong manhunt
LEAGUE CITY, TX (KTRK) -- A pursuit that began in League City on Sunday evening and included shots fired at police officers ended Monday afternoon, when authorities closed in on Joshua World, who then killed himself.
It started around 6:30pm in the 1400 block of League City Parkway at the Amalfi Apartments in League City. US Marshals were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on World when he fled, officials in League City said. Late Monday afternoon, marshals located World at a vacant home in the Heritage Colony subdivision.
Officers surrounded the home. According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, World then shot himself in the head. He died at the scene. No law enforcement officers were injured.
World, 29, was accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend, Jeanette Ochoa, 26, on Saturday at 301 North Hagerman around 12:30pm. She was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital, where she is listed in critical condition. Houston police say Ochoa was shot while moving into a new home in east Houston.
US marshals were on World's tail, watching his League City apartment from a distance. Around 6:30pm Sunday, he got into an SUV and took off. A chase ensued, during which police say World opened fire on police and other drivers. A civilian vehicle and a police cruiser were hit, but officials said no one was injured.
"The chase went through League City into Dickinson, back through League City and then into Webster and Friendswood," a spokesperson for the League City police said.
Police officers lost World in Friendswood. His car was found overnight, abandoned behind a Target store on West Bay Area Boulevard near Baybrook Mall.
World had been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for the shooting of his ex-girlfriend in east Houston. He was also facing charges of attempted capital murder and aggravated assault for the chase and shootings in the League City area.
