HPD apologizes to family after officers burst into wrong NW Houston home

Tuesday, October 01, 2013

It's been a terrifying night for a northwest Houston family after police burst through their front door.

It happened at a home near the intersection of Antoine and Tidwell.

Police have apologized to the family several times. They say they received a call about a shooting but were given the wrong address.

"Right away it's, 'Get on the ground, get on the ground! 'Show me your hands, show me your hands.' And 'Get on the ground!' And I'm yelling like crazy, 'What the heck is going on?'" Jessica Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez and her husband Joe Acosta Acosta were fast asleep when they heard loud banging at their door.

"My first instinct is whoever comes in there, I'm sorry, I'm going to start shooting. First thing that goes through my mind is my babies, my family, my wife," Acosta said.

Before he knew it, Houston police kicked down his door and ordered everyone inside to the ground. His two young children were in their room as Acosta says police handcuffed him and led him outside.

"While theyr'e going downstairs, I hear them say, 'You guys have the wrong apartment, it's over here,'" Acosta said.

Police had received a frantic call about a shooting, but they got the wrong address. The actual incident was happening next door, where the window remains shattered.

The department has apologized, saying officers were given the wrong address and were told it was "a life or death situation."

Police even asked apartment managers to fix the door, saying they could file a claim with the city to pay for the damage.

But this family says an apology isn't enough. Their two children are still in shock.

"He goes, 'When I heard that it just scared me.' He goes, 'I hugged my brother,'" Rodriguez said.

The couple's door has been fixed, but they're still considering taking legal action.
