SEALY, TX (KTRK) -- Sealy ISD canceled classes at two schools today due to flood damage from yesterday's rain.
The school district notified nearly 1,000 students of Selman Intermediate and Sealy Junior High to not come to school today. Classes are expected to resume tomorrow.
The schools share a single building, which sustained damage in Sunday's storms. The Sealy ISD administration building also flooded during the torrential downpour. About 10 computers were lost to water damage.
Sealy was hit with just over nine inches of rain in a matter of hours, and the water was able to seep in through the doors and into the hallways and even some classrooms.
"Basically, we got too much, too quick and water came off the hills, through the gullies, came into our doors," Sealy ISD Superintendent Scott Kana said. "The drainage just couldn't handle it all."
Crews working through the night and day are using industrial hoses, drying vents and dehumidifiers to get the properties back to their original shape. Carpets have been pulled up and there will be some sheetrock work required.
Although intermediate and junior high students have the day off, the closures do not affect Selman Elementary and Sealy High School.
While administrators expect to hold classes as scheduled on Tuesday, if anything changes, they will alert parents.
