Good Samaritan rescues abused puppy

BOOTHWYN, PA -- Authorities in Delaware County, Pennsylvania are trying to track down the individual who inflicted unspeakable physical abuse on a puppy.

A three week old Pit Bull pup is lucky to be alive. He is being nurtured and cared for by good Samaritans Friday night who learn of his ordeal.

"It's horrible what happen to him, but I do want people to be aware of what happen to these kinds of dogs," said Michelle Lord.

It was back on December 21st that Michelle Lord and her mother Dolly were at the Conchester Animal Hospital in Boothwyn when a woman and a man wearing surgical gloves walked in with two one week old pit bulls, one of them with a bad cut to his back.

"The cut was pretty deep, very thin slice but, it was down to the chest cavity," said Debbie Hamilton.

When the receptionist at the hospital asked how the dog ended up that way, the couple gave a number of conflicting stories.

"One was he found it in a U-Haul," said Hamilton.

"Then he changed it to they found him on the side of the road, then the woman said that friends of theirs had him and there was a fight," said Dolly Jackson-Ford.

Then the couple admitted that they had done it apparently as part of a pain conditioning ritual to prepare the pup for dog-fighting, but the cut went too deep.

"They do that to inflict pain so the pain tolerance is built up as they grow up," explained Hamilton.

When the couple was told it would cost $350 to stitch up the badly wounded pup and that there was no guarantee he would survive, they said they only had $20.

When the receptionist offered to adopt the dog and pay for the work herself, the couple said no and began to leave.

Michelle Lord caught up with them outside and asked what they were going to do with the puppies.

"He said he was going to throw them somewhere," she said.

Lord pleaded with them to let her adopt the puppies, and they finally gave her the badly injured male.

They paid to have him treated and have been nursing him since.

They also contacted Justice Rescue, an animal rights group in Havertown who has agreed to help lead the search to identify the couple who said they were from Chester.

"It is a cold hearted individual to be able to do that," said Michelle.

Justice Rescue is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.
