Samoa Air is introducing a 'pay as you weigh' fare policy.

The weight of each passenger and their luggage will be considered when calculating a fare. People will have to be weighed at the airport prior to boarding their flight.

The carrier only flies two 10-seater aircrafts and one four-seater plane, so every pound counts.

On the cheapest flights each kilogram costs roughly $1. So an average 5-year-old boy who weighs 40 pounds would pay about $18.

An average man weighing 160 pounds would pay about $72 for a one-way ticket. However, someone who may be tipping the scale around 300 pounds would pay $136 for a short one-way trip.

"The indications are that once people have acknowledged that the aero plane runs by weight and not by seats, it makes it a lot easier for them to understand," said Chris Langton, Chief Executive of Samoa Air.

Industry insiders warn a 'pay as you weigh' policy may be the way of the future.
