Houston-area lawmaker running for ag commissioner

AUSTIN, TX -- Republican lawmaker Brandon Creighton says he is running for Texas agriculture commissioner.

Creighton touted his experience as a rancher, lawyer and lawmaker when he launched his campaign Thursday in Montgomery. Creighton is from Conroe, north of Houston.

Current Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples is running for lieutenant governor, leaving the post vacant. Creighton will face Eric Opiela in the Republican primary.

Creighton has served four terms in the Texas House and is the current Republican majority leader.

In announcing his candidacy, Creighton said Texas agriculture faces many challenges, from protecting property and water rights to federal environmental regulation. He promised to fight for traditional values.

He has recently served on the House Insurance, Redistricting and International Affairs committees. Creighton has also worked for the Texas and Oklahoma attorney generals.
