St. Thomas settles on lion as Celts' mascot

Tuesday, June 26, 2007

The University of St. Thomas on Monday selected a lion, adapted from the Scottish royal coat of arms, to represent the school's newest mascot, the Celts.

The logo was chosen over the images of a Celtic helmet and an Irish wolfhound.

The school's mascot name has evolved from the Saints to the Fightin' Celts, and now just the Celts.

"The mascot logo will complement our University brand of the shining star and the official University seal," UST president Robert Ivany said. "This mascot will provide us with a means to inspire our students, enliven campus spirit and encourage representation of the University."

An independent member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the University of St. Thomas introduced its first varsity women's volleyball team in 2006 and has added men's soccer to its fall 2007 roster.
