Remembering the Great Imposter

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- He was the subject of one of the most famous, or infamous, stories this television station has ever done. Eyewitness Sports Director Bob Allen has more on the story of the late Great Imposter.

When the Major League Baseball All-Star Game came to the Astrodome in 1986, Barry Bremen, known as the Great Imposter, wanted to take batting practice at the National League team practice.

Bremen passed away last week after a battle with cancer, and his adventure here in Houston would become his last adventure of many.

Bremen came by the station to talk before heading out to the Dome. After this story aired (watch video above), Tommy Lasorda was not a happy man. This was the final adventure of the Great Imposter in July 1986.

I bailed Bremen out of the Houston jail downtown and he came out of the cell still wearing his Mets uniform at 12:30 in the morning. On the way to dropping him off at his hotel he told me that being the guest of the city of Houston in their jail was so miserable that the All-Star Game would be his last gig. And it was. Barry Bremen died last week on his 64th birthday.
