Selection committee chair named AD at Hofstra

Jeff Hathaway was forced out at Connecticut last summer, but was still able to hold onto his high-profile position as chair of the men's basketball tournament selection committee by being a consultant in the Big East.

Jeff Hathaway was forced out at Connecticut last summer but was still able to hold onto his high-profile position as chair of the men's basketball tournament selection committee by being a consultant in the Big East.

Now, Hathaway has completely resurrected his career in less than a year.

Hathaway confirmed multiple earlier media reports that he will be named director of athletics at Hofstra on Tuesday. Hathaway said Monday night that he will also be named a vice president.

Hathaway replaces Jack Hayes, who left for a similar position at Brown.

Hathaway was the athletic director at UConn from June 2003 until last August. He had a frosty relationship with Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun, and, even though his exit was termed a retirement, multiple sources at UConn said president Susan Herbst wanted a change.

Hathaway has now been an athletic director in the Big East (Connecticut), Mountain West (Colorado State) and now the Colonial Athletic Association.

Hathaway's tenure at UConn had highs with national championships in men's and women's basketball and a BCS game in football. But there was also an NCAA violations case that led to a three-game suspension for Calhoun and a poor Academic Progress Report issue that ultimately brought about a ban for the 2013 NCAA tournament.

Hathaway's five-year selection committee term ends in September. He was in New Orleans to present Kentucky with the national title.
