SAN ANTONIO, TX (KTRK) -- The Katy Tigers shook off some early jitters, then dominated San Antonio's Madison Mavericks 66-21 in the 5A Division II state semifinals Saturday at the Alamodome.
Katy will face Pflugerville, a 20-14 winner over Abiline, in the 5A Division II final in San Antonio.
The Tigers stepped up their execution in the second half, scoring four touchdowns on four possessions and another TD on a punt return.
In the first half, Katy capitalized on a SA Madison fumble midway into the first quarter. Tigers quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell threw a 32-yard strike to Terrance Avie for a 7-0 lead.
SA Madison kept pace, however, thanks to Andrew Green's 82-yard interception return for a touchdown with 2:41 left in the quarter to tie the game at 7.
The Tigers bounced right back in the second quarter, as Mitchell connected with Avie again, this time for a 26-yard touchdown reception to go ahead 14-7. But the Mavericks responded with a TD pass of its own to knot it 14-14.
Katy then kicked into overdrive in the final minutes of the first half. Running back Aundre Dean scored from 5 yards out with 3:19 left, and Mitchell's third touchdown pass -- a 54-yard strike to Joey Fuda -- propelled the Tigers to a 28-14 lead going into halftime.
