(5/28/05 - KTRK/HOUSTON) (KTRK) -- The Texans are looking forward to a new season - a winning season - with some new players.
There are new players, a new coaching staff, and the same quarterback of whom big things are expected.
After being the first overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft, David Carr has been the victim of poor coaching and a team that failed to surround him with the talent needed to win. Now all that is there and it's time for him to show what he can do.
Gary Kubiak says Carr's got the talent to do it. There are now no more excuses. The ball is in his court and he likes what he sees on this first day of camp.
"I think the guys came out good, got around," said Carr. "Had good retention from the stuff we had in the spring. I felt like mentally, I didn't feel like I missed a beat, so I kind of retained everything we did in the summer. This was nice, because it felt like we came in with something in the sack, like we had already done some things. We had done some good work. It didn't feel like we were starting all over again. I feel like I had some things that I learned in the spring that I could carry over and made for a pretty good practice. We're going to have 30 more of these, so at the end of that, we should be a pretty good football team."
The Texans sent a conditional draft choice to the 49ers for third-string quarterback Cody Pickett. He's in his third year out of Washington.
