Texans name Grossman backup QB

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The Houston Texans named QB Rex Grossman as the second-string quarterback entering Week 1.

Grossman will back up starter Matt Schaub with Dan Orlovsky as the third-string QB. Despite missing more than two weeks of training camp with a hamstring injury, Grossman, the one-time Super Bowl quarterback, won the backup job by performing well in the preseason finale versus Tampa Bay. Grossman went nine for 17 for 197 yards and two TDs in a 27-20 win over the Buccaneers.

"I've got to prove myself every game, every practice, every time I throw the football so they see what I can do," Grossman told Eyewitness Sports.

Head coach Gary Kubiak said Grossman's experience made the difference.

"I'm leaning toward Rex, his experience, the way he's handled himself, the way he's handled the team, drawing from what he's done in the past. I'm more comfortable with Rex," said Kubiak.

Meanwhile, Orlovsky threw an interception against the Bucs for his third straight preseason game with one pick. The former Lions quarterback passed for only one TD in the Texans' four preseason games.

"It's not going to change my mindset. I will continue to prepare," said Orlovsky.

After becoming a free agent earlier this year, Grossman signed with Houston in June to compete for the third-string QB job, or at least showcase his skills for another team. Houston cut QB Alex Brink in order to keep both Grossman and Orlovsky.

"When I was out there, I felt confident. I was having fun and there seemed to be a place to go with the ball every snap. This situation is exciting for me to be a part of," said Grossman.

The Texans open on Sunday, September 13, at home against the New York Jets.
