Jailer accused of warning man about warrant

Sunday, December 18, 2005

A Cameron County jailer accused of warning a family friend about a warrant issued for him in a drug trafficking case was scheduled to go on trial next week.

Dora Chavez, 35, faces a misdemeanor count of unauthorized computer access. Her trial was set for Dec. 30.

Authorities accuse Chavez of abusing her job as a processing detention officer to run a criminal background check on Ruben Escobedo Garcia, a 45-year-old wanted in a 1992 federal drug trafficking case, according to court records.

Chavez was initially arrested on a charge of hindering apprehension or prosecution Dec. 2. But state prosecutors dismissed the charge after federal authorities filed one count of disseminating information from a national crime database against her. The federal felony charge was later reduced to a misdemeanor count of unauthorized computer access.

Chavez is free on a $50,000 bond.
