Public memorial service to be held for ex-Texas football coach Royal
AUSTIN, TX -- A public memorial service will be held Tuesday in Austin for former Texas football coach Darrell Royal.
Royal, who won two national championships, died early Wednesday in Austin of complications from cardiovascular disease. UT officials say Royal also suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He was 88.
The Longhorns on Saturday will honor Royal at their home game against Iowa State by wearing "DKR" stickers on their helmets.
The public memorial ceremony is scheduled for noon Tuesday at the Frank Erwin Center basketball arena. Royal will be buried at the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, an honor typically reserved for the state's military and political leaders.
University officials on Wednesday night illuminated the iconic UT Tower with burnt orange floodlights in Royal's honor.
