A judge in Texarkana has given a former northeast Texas police sergeant a week to decide whether to take a plea in an assault case where he's accused of injecting his wife with animal-euthanizing drugs.

David Horn is set for trial in September for the attack last year on his wife, Misty.

State District Judge Bobby Lockhart gave Horn's lawyers Thursday until Aug. 16 to let him know if Horn will plead guilty or go to trial.

Bowie County sheriff's deputies responding to a 911 call from Misty Horn's daughter found the woman unconscious. She was in a coma for days.

The Texarkana Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1czDNAw ) documents show Horn had access to drugs because of animal control work he did in Hooks.

Conviction could get him life in prison.
