ICE officials: Nearly 1,700 sex offenders in Texas targeted for deportation this fiscal year
Saturday, August 10, 2013
SAN ANTONIO -- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say they have targeted nearly 1,700 sex offenders in Texas for deportation this fiscal year.
Enrique Lucero, director of ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations San Antonio field office, says the agency uses a list of sex offenders provided by the Texas Department of Public Safety to find those that can be deported. Lucero told the San Antonio Express-News that sexual offenders are a priority for the agency.
Nationally, ICE has removed about 300,000 immigrants living in the U.S. illegally this fiscal year. About 165,000 of them had criminal convictions.
