2 die in crash of plane bound from Greenville

BARDELL, TX -- Federal authorities say a small plane that crashed in a North Texas field -- killing both people on board -- had been flying from Greenville to the Austin area.

Investigators on Monday did not immediately release names of the victims in the fiery accident. The Department of Public Safety says the crash happened Sunday near Bardwell, about 35 miles south of Dallas.

DPS Sgt. Lonny Haschel says witnesses said the single-engine Beechcraft leveled off as if to make an emergency landing but appeared to stall and crashed into a tree. Authorities are trying to determine what caused the accident.

Federal Aviation Administration records show the plane was registered to an Austin man. The FAA says the aircraft was bound for Lakeway Airpark near Austin.
