Family of disabled North Texas student awarded $1M in lawsuit against Keller ISD over teacher abuse claims

FORT WORTH, TX -- A federal jury has awarded $1 million to a North Texas family that sued a school district over claims it didn't stop a special education teacher from injuring their disabled son.

The family of Terrence Rideau II was awarded the damages Friday by the jury in Fort Worth. The 18-year-old Rideau cannot talk and is confined to a wheelchair.

The lawsuit alleged Rideau suffered a head contusion, fractured thumb and dislocated knee as a result of mistreatment by the teacher in 2009 and 2010 at a school in Keller, northeast of Fort Worth.

Thomas Brandt, an attorney for the Keller school district, tells the Fort Worth Star-Telegram there's no evidence the injuries occurred at school.

The teacher is no longer with the district.
