DALLAS, TX -- Southern Methodist University could start selling beer at its sports venues as early as January.
Athletic director Rick Hart tells The Dallas Morning News that beer sales could begin during the upcoming basketball season at Moody Coliseum. SMU is also proposing expanding alcohol sales to all of Gerald Ford Stadium for football.
Alcohol is already permitted in football luxury suites.
The newspaper reports that SMU has already obtained state and local permits, but is waiting for signoff from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
Officials at some other universities in Texas have talked about opening alcohol sales in their football stadiums, both to draw in fans and to curb binge drinking before the game.
