MONTAGUE, TX -- A 17-year-old boy has been indicted on a manslaughter charge in connection with the shooting death of a North Texas high school football player.
District Attorney Paige Williams told the Denton Record-Chronicle that the grand jury handed up the indictment against Michael Bryce Underwood on Monday at the Montague County Courthouse.
On Aug. 31, 18-year-old Nathan Maki was fatally shot while camping out with Underwood and two 18-year-old women. They planned to go dove hunting.
Montague County Sheriff Paul Cunningham said at the time that Underwood accidentally shot Maki with a rifle.
Underwood was arrested at the scene on a charge of underage possession of alcohol and later released on bond.
Manslaughter is a second-degree felony and carries a potential sentence of two to 20 years in prison.
