MCKINNEY, TX -- A North Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing his mother and draining her bank account.
Prosecutors in McKinney on Monday announced the penalty for 48-year-old Thomas Grady Layton of Granbury.
A jury on Friday convicted Layton of capital murder in the 2010 shooting of 64-year-old Grada Layton of Plano at her home. Prosecutors didn't seek the death penalty. The son received an automatic life prison term.
Investigators say Layton was an only child who resented his mother and wanted more money - even though she gave him a house and a vehicle.
Prosecutors say Layton, who served time in burglary and drug cases, shot his mother as she slept and took her bank card. Authorities didn't immediately say how much money was stolen.
