AMARILLO, TX (KTRK) -- A school district in the Texas panhandle will soon allow teachers to carry guns.
Schools in the town of Shamrock near Amarillo will have signs that say teachers are armed. It warns anyone walking onto its campus that teachers are not just packing heat. They're willing to use whatever force needed to protect their students and themselves.
"We want people, when they drive up to our campus, to realize that we have taken the steps to protect our kids and our staff," said Superinendent Wes Beck
Back in July, the school board unanimously voted to allow trained staff members to carry a firearm on campus.
The superintendent says it's part of a new security plan that also involves bullet-proof windows, security cameras and an intercom system.
