The Black Heritage Society's programs begin at 7pm with the Dreamkeepers' Ball, a reception, dinner and awards program at the CWA Union Hall, 1730 Jefferson The MLK Parade Foundation will host its MLK Grande Auxiliary Competition, featuring dance teams and other marching groups, beginning at 7pm at the Hilton Hotel Southwest, 6780 Southwest Freeway

The heritage society's Dreamkeepers' Children's March will step off at 10am Saturday at Griggs Road and Martin Luther King Blvd The parade foundation's Fifth Annual MLK Youth Parade, featuring 25 bands, seven floats and more than 100 performing groups, will begin at noon at Minute Maid Park downtown King-Fest MLK parade in Galveston: The 10th annual King-Fest Martin Luther King parade will start at 1 p.m. Saturday starting at the intersection of MLK Boulevard (29th Street) and Market Street in Galveston. MLK Battle of the Bands 20 Nationally Acclaimed Marching Bands Will Perform at Joe Kelly Butler Stadium, 13755 South Main Saturday, 4pm Thomas Holt, a University of Chicago history professor, will explore themes from his new book, Children of Fire: A History of African Americans, at 2pm Saturday at the downtown Central Library The Black Heritage Society will sponsor a health fair from 10am to 4:30pm Saturday at MacGregor Park

January 17, Monday Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast at 8:15 at the Hyatt-Regency Hotel, 1200 Louisiana Street: The North Houston Frontiers Club will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast at the Hyatt-Regency-Downtown. The Keynote Speaker will be Mr. Len Cannon, Channel 11 News Anchor. Mr. Willie Stanfield, General Manager, Corporate Development & Diversity of Marathon Oil, is the Honorary Chairperson. During the Breakfast, The Prestigious Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major Award will be presented to Mrs. Tammie Lang Campbell, Executive Director & Founder, Honey Brown Hope Foundation The heritage society's 33rd Annual 'Original' Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade downtown starts at 10am. It will begin on Texas Avenue near Minute Maid Park, then travel down Caroline and San Jacinto before returning to the park on Prairie. A free concert will be held at 1pm The parade foundation's 17th Annual MLK Grande Parade will begin at 2pm on Allen Parkway near Taft, travel to the edge of downtown and return. Pre-parade activities, including performances by top contestants in Saturday's battle of the bands, will begin at 10am The Children's Museum of Houston will commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday with a peace rally on Monday, Jan. 17. At noon, Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech will be recited by the Gardere Oratory Competition winner, who will be introduced by State Rep. Garnet Coleman. A peace rally will be led through the museum by the Children's Museum's Kid's Committee to celebrate freedom of speech. The Young Harmonies of Houston also will perform. Montgomery County MLK Celebration: The event will be hosted by St. Paul Church. Organizers. he event will start at noon at The Woodlands United Methodist Church at 2200 Lake Woodlands Drive. The event is free to the public. There will be be an essay and poster contest.
