Our top 10 barbecue restaurants in Houston

Sunday, May 27, 2007

If you live in Texas, you have no excuse not to take the time and sample some of our very good barbecue. While Central Texas might have a well deserved reputation, the Houston-area is not too shabby when it comes to smoked meats either.

We're not professional food critics, but just two guys who have taken it upon ourselves to seek out delicious barbecue. So get lots of napkins and an extra plate for bones, 'cause here are our top ten favorite places to eat barbecue in the Houston area.

Burns Barbecue
8397 De Priest
281-445-7574
Great ribs and delicious sausage are the things to order at this hard-to-find Acres Homes treasure. The sides are first-rate -- I especially love the beans which feature lots of chopped beef and barbecue sauce that make them something special. My favorite BBQ place in Houston. (Joe's pick)

The County Line Bar-B-Q
Cutten Road - one mile north of FM 1960
281-537-2454
The toughest part might be finding the place since it is tucked away near a neighborhood. The portions are large and the wheat bread delicious especially with the honey butter. There are lots of options for the main course, but I've never been too hot on the sides. Since the portions are so large, I've never made it to dessert. (Mike and Joe's pick)

Goode Company Barbecue
5109 Kirby
713-522-2530
City barbecue at its best. Good flavorful brisket, sausage is average, I enjoy the turkey, but the ribs are a little tough for my taste. I do like their sides, especially the meat-filled rice. The sauce is good. And I do like the jalapeno bread. My biggest complaint -- the food almost seems like it's been on an assembly line. But if you've never had anything better, you'd think this was heaven on earth. (Joe's pick)

Hinze's
3940 Hwy 59 Loop N
Wharton, Tx
979-532-2710
This spot was like an oasis in the desert for us after throwing "caution to the wind" to cover a tropical storm. Great ribs, very good brisket and a large and varied selection of side orders. I stop at this place any time I'm in the vicinity. I also like the sister location off of Interstate-10 in Sealy, but I think the Wharton location has a little bit better atmosphere and is a tad better, I think. (Joe and Mike's pick)

Joe's Barbeque Company
1400 E Highway 6
Alvin, TX
281-331-9626
Joe's Barbeque Company is in a rustic looking building that has a good vibe for barbecue. While the staff seemed a little confused at times, the food more than made up for it. I ordered my usual, a sliced brisket sandwich, then added potato salad and followed that up with peach cobbler and ice cream. With the latter, it's all you can eat with 10 flavors of ice cream to choose from. I hear the ribs are very good too.(Mike's pick)

Luling City Market
4726 Richmond
713-871-1903
Meat... meat... and more meat! This place would scare a vegetarian to death. Great ribs, incredible sausage and excellent brisket. Unusual orange sauce that grows on you and becomes addictive. Sides are nothing special, but this has become one of my favorite BBQ stops in town. Not quite up to the standards of the original Luling City Market in Central Texas, but as good as you can get in Houston inside Loop 610. (Joe and Mike's pick)

Mikeska Bar-B-Q
4053 Hwy 90 East, along I-10
Columbus, TX
979-732-2293
If you are heading out to Austin, make sure you stop by this uniquely shaped restaurant with lots of animals on the wall (you know you're in Texas). Get in line and start grabbing sides because they are worth it. The meat and sauce are both full of flavor. (Mike's pick)

Pizzitola's Barbecue
1703 Shepherd
713-227-2283
Great brisket and very good ribs are my favorites here. The sides are okay, but desserts are very good. Interesting atmosphere in a building that is overflowing with character. (Joe's pick)

Thelma's Bar B Que
1020 Live Oak St
713-228-2262
Thelma's is named after the owner. You can find her there pretty much anytime you walk into the newly renovated restaurant. This place, across 59 from downtown, is famous. It's been featured all over the media and is good. However I was surprised the first time I went there. Upon ordering a barbecue chicken sandwich, I got two pieces of white bread with chicken in the middle, the only problem, there was a big leg bone still attached! Good thing I didn't bite down. After I tossed the bone aside, the chicken was very good. Don't even get me started on the desserts! I had a piece of apple pie that took me to barbecue restaurant heaven. (Mike's pick)

Williams Smokehouse
5903 Wheatley
713-680-8409
Excellent ribs and good brisket are the standouts at this Acres Home spot (no relation to Joe). The vinegar-based sauce is good, with a bit of a kick. The sides are nothing special. Another good spot for soulful Houston BBQ. (Joe and Mike's pick)

Honorable Mention
We both think that if Joe's barber, Randy Rogers, had a restaurant, we'd eat there. This man knows how to use a pit!

By the way, no one from abc13 receives money, advertisement or free meals when picking out these favorite restaurants.

Kin Folks is not actually a restaurant but a trailer on little york and tc jester. This guy is very clean and he and his wife do all the cooking. He serves chopped beef, mmmmm ribs, spicy bouidain and the best home made lemon cake ever. He is only there on Fridays and Saturday nights after 9:30 but the place gets packed. It is very well recommended and very affordable. It is located in the Chevron Has station on the corner of little york and tc jester. I promise you will not be dissappointed. The potato salad is store bought but that is the only down side. This guy had tons of customers and catering jobs. You have to try it out.

I have tried many of the places Miska's, Hungry Farmer's, Thelma's , Goode, Blake's etc but the best I have had is at No Names in Pasadena off 225. Tender smoked meat with a good sauce. Don't forget to get there peach cobbler while you are there.

I grew up in Alvin. Joe's is good but Central Texas BBQ in Pearland is awesome! Everything there is great! Tried Thelma, Joe's, Goode Co., Schultz in Rosenberg, etc. Central Texas is still the best! Also, there used to be a spot in Fifth Ward called Powell's BBQ-delicious! Chopped beef on white sliced bread...mmm.
- Rita

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Thomas Bar-B-Que" on the North Loop West near Ella. I think they are great. The stuffed baked potatoe with beef is enough for 2 meals. The ribs are wonderful and the sauce is the best around. Try them sometime, I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

KD's BBQ on Kuykendahl in Spring is fantastic. The meat is never dry always tasty. The sausage is the best I have ever eaten at a BBQ restuarant, and the potato salad is great too. The owners are always there and just down right friendly folks.
- Jon

There is no doubt about it: Goode Company BBQ is he standard by which all other BBQ is judged IN HOUSTON. Jim Goode has been doing it right all along.
- Michael Bettler

How could you not mention B.B.Q Inn on Crosstimbers? We drive from Hempstead to eat there. Everything there is wonderful. It has to be good for them to stay in business since 1946.

- Andrea Pesonen

There is a place located on Gessner 2 blocks east of the Tanner Rd intersection called Virgie's BarBQue. The meat is absolutely great. I know you will like it, because I also like Burns. The meat is smoked to the bone and it is finger lickin' good!
- Ava Stewart

I highly second Joe's Barbecue in Alvin and Hinze's in Wharton (in that order). I live in Pearland; and, in my opinion, Central has NOTHING on those two places.
- Melanie

Schulze BBQ on Hwy 36 is the best in Rosenberg, TX Vasos BBQ is also great on Dairy Ashford in Sugar Land, TX Let's not forget Hickory Barn on Wilcrest in Houston.

I'm not disappointed with your BBQ list. The line at The Hungry Farmer on the Northside is long enough as it is. Let's keep this hole-in-wall a little secret between you and I, ok?
- Roy

I was reading the list of the best BBQ in Houston. I'm sure I must have missed it because Blake's BBQ wasn't on the list! Blake's BBQ located on Jeanetta Street (between Richmond and Westhiemer) has without a doubt the best BBQ! It must have been overlooked....right?
- Sunny

Gator Junction has the best BBQ Ribs we've tasted in Anahuac,Tx. Mo's BBQ on 1960 in Humble, TX has the best BBQ Baked Potato w/chopped beef. Lookin' up and try them, you won't regret it.
- Marjorie A. Hampton

Yeah, Central Texas BBQ in Pearland is definitely the best!
- Ethan

BBQ with definite excellent quality is Lyndon's off hwy 290 & Hollister(in shopping center on south side of 290). This place rocks and I think highly of Lulings.
- Chuck Hadley

I just read your article on BBQ and you left off the best BBQ place in all of Texas. It is "THE SWINGIN DOOR" BBQ located on FM 359 in Richmond, Texas.
- Lori Avila

I'm a little parital to Hinze's in Wharton mainly because I have eaten there for last 25-30 yrs. The rib don't need any sauce 'cause they're seasoned just right. Around Thanksgiving and Christmas people are picking up Hinze's pies by the trunk load. Now the one in Sealy is not a sister restraurant....it's his older brother that has that one. Try them for a caterer job. They don't let you go hungry.
- Leroy Dettling

Burns barbeque has the best barbeque in Texas and very friendly people.
- Kathy Randle

My son's BBQ is the best hands down. His rub and sauce are too die for. If I could send it to our daughter in Iraq, would do it. Everyone loves his BBQ.
- Molly Garza

Goode Company sliced beef on jalapeno bread with a slice of pecan pie...there IS nothing better nearby, and I've looked.
- Leslie Dashough

Swinging Door BBQ on FM 359 in Richmond, Tx! Great atmosphere, REAL Texas BBQ, great selection of sides and desserts!
- MH Greene

Central Texas BBQ in Pearland at 518 & 35 (Telephone Rd) is the best. They know what they are doing.
- Darrin

I love Hickory Hollow in the Heights, especially the ribs and smoked chicken. Their food is consistently excellent.
- Laura Schorr Greenbaum

Brother-in-Laws BBQ is the best on the east side of Houston.
- Roland Otts

Mikeska's in Columbus is good, but Mikeska's in El Campo is the best. You have not had a side order until you have tasted their rice salad!
- Catherine Balusek Ryan

Ya'll need to give Baker's Ribs a try. Try the sliced beef, but ask for outside cut. Their BBQ sauce is a amazing. And the marinated tomatoes are a pretty nice side item.
