Hole in freeway ramp causes traffic backup

Tuesday, November 06, 2007

A huge hole that caused a traffic mess on the west 610 Loop won't be a problem for drivers today.

The hole opened up yesterday on the ramp from the 610 Loop to the Southwest Freeway, sending debris falling to Richmond below.

Wayne Dolcefino and 13 Undercover happened to be on assignment nearby. They called police as they watched the pile of concrete on Richmond get larger and larger. They worried that someone might get hurt. It took a full 30 minutes for police to arrive and shut the street down.

No one was injured, but the falling cement came within feet of hitting a woman who happened to be driving under the ramp at that exact moment.

"I was coming from lunch, and I was turning here and it almost fell right on my car," said driver Martha Rios.

TxDOT crews worked all evening to repair the hole.

TxDOT says a pothole was repaired at this same location last week.

The problem caused big headaches on the road yesterday. You can always find traffic updates right here.
