People living along the coast or in a designated evacuation zone where the storm surge flooding is possible should be prepared to leave when a hurricane threatens.

If you live inland, "hunker down" and take shelter at home until the storm passes . However, you should consider evacuating if you have medical needs or do not have the means to take care of yourself during the storm or immediately afterwards. People who live inland will be asked to wait until coastal residents have evacuated.

People living in mobile homes or in high-rise buildings which are more suspetible to wind damage should take shelter elsewhere.

If necessary, evacuation contraflow traffic lanes will be set up on Interstate 10 west of Houston and on Interstate 45, US Highways 59 and 290 north of Houston. Listen to ABC13 for more information. When you hit the road, follow the road signs carefully.

Before leaving, make sure your house is secure. Take food and water for the trip because stores might not be open along the route. Fill your car up with gas as soon as possible. Bring extra cash in case ATMs are not working. Notify family members about your plan and final destination. And be patient. Travel times will be significantly longer than usual.
