HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Tropical Storm Helene quickly weakened into a tropical depression Saturday after moving ashore on Mexico's Gulf Coast, bringing strong rains but few reports of damage.
As of Saturday afternoon, Helene had maximum sustained winds of 30mph and was moving west-northwest at 5mph, but was expected to dissipate Saturday night or early Sunday.
Helene's remnants will drift over east Mexico the next couple of days then possibly move back into the Gulf, says Eyewitness News Meteorologist David Tillman. It may interact with warm waters and a front and regenerate tropically in the Tuesday to Wednesday timeframe.
If the remnants move our way, it could affect us late next week.
In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Gordon strengthened into a hurricane as it moved toward the east on a track that could take it near the eastern Azores islands Sunday night. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 105 mphand it was 590 miles west-southwest of the Azores.
Back home, scattered storms with brief heavy rain and lightning will be possible throughout the weekend. Some minor street flooding is possible.
