NYC smoking ban largely ignored

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Whether you like it or not, the law that bans smoking in New York City beaches, parks, and pedestrian plazas is in full effect, but not everyone is aware of it.

Some New Yorkers say there are not enough signs posted or they're too small.

At Columbus Circle it's confusing, since it's a pedestrian plaza, but there are no signs indicating whether you can smoke or not.

According to the City Parks Department, 3,000 signs have been placed in the beaches and parks, with 2,000 more to come.

You'll see bigger signs around Greeley Square Park, Bryant Park, and Herald Square Park, telling you to smell the flowers, not smoke. All are managed by private companies.

Critics say the law is poorly enforced.

City parks officials say the rule is intended to be largely self-enforcing by New Yorkers. But the question is, if you saw someone smoking, would you say something?
