12 of 16: Stephen Ritz, a science teacher at Discovery High School in the Bronx, delivers a speech at the Above & Beyond awards ceremony on June 6. Using a vertical growing technology, Ritz has spearheaded a program that has allowed his students to grow close to 20,000 vegetables a year  under any conditions.
