BROOKLYN (WABC) -- Health officials are trying to contain an outbreak of mumps in Brooklyn and New Jersey.
The health department says at least 57 cases of confirmed or probable cases of mumps have been reported in Borough Park.
Most of the patients, between the ages of 10 to 15, attended a camp in upstate New York last August.
The health department is asking doctors to be on the lookout for more cases.
Meanwhile, health officials say a mumps outbreak in New Jersey is linked to the outbreak in Brooklyn, N.Y.About 30 people in Lakewood, between the age of 1 to 40 years old, have come down with the disease in the last two weeks.
The Ocean County Health Department says the cases have been primarily contained to one section of the township and some of those infected may have come into contact with each other. Health officials say most had been fully vaccinated against the disease.
The mumps spreads though coughs and sneezes.
Symptoms include fever and swollen glands near the ears.
Officials said those infected should stay home five days from the onset of symptoms to prevent spreading the disease.
