Holtsville, NY (WABC) -- It happened in the normally quiet hamlet of Holtsville on Long Island.
Police believe the attacker didn't know his victim, but rather, took advantage of a situation while he was lurking around the neighborhood.
Investigators also say that the attacker knew his victim was home alone in the early morning hours.
He pounced on the woman while she was in her garage, with her car idling in her driveway.
Suffolk County resident, Ashley Milito said, "I do usually try to close things behind me because you never know, you know lock the car doors, lock the house, it's scary definitely, but you don't expect it around here you know."It happened at 6:30 in the morning, as the victim was leaving for work.
Detective Sgt. Frank Stewart of the Suffolk County Police said, "She was getting ready for work, she was loading the car with some items she was taking to work, the garage door was open, she went inside through the garage into the house to get more items and when she came out into the interior door to the garage area she was confronted by a male."
The attacker is young, possibly a teenager, a white male 18 to 20 years old, he has a stocky build and stands about 5'9", he was also dressed in black wearing a baseball cap under a hooded sweatshirt, and he smokes.
Detective Sgt. Stewart said, "She said there was a strong smell of cigarette smoke on him, which was the only thing she detected on him odor-wise. There's no indication through her that he was intoxicated or high."
The victim, in her mid 30's fought back as bravely as she could. She suffered lacerations and bruises to her head and face during the sexual assault in her garage. He then ran away on foot.
The victim was treated at an area hospital and is recovering from her injuries. There is a $5,000 reward for information leading to the suspect's arrest.
