WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- New Jersey's Republican governor-elect is making traditional Democratic strongholds the focus of his first post-election appearances.
On Thursday, Chris Christie visited Woodbridge, a sprawling suburb that voted Republican for the first time in memory. Christie carried the town by nearly 2,000 votes.
Mayor John McCormac, a Democrat who was former Gov. Jim McGreevey's state treasurer, walked alongside as Christie received well-wishes from merchants up and down Main Street.
Christie is the first Republican to win the governorship in a dozen years. He says his administration will encourage bipartisanship.
His first public event after defeating Democrat Jon Corzine was to visit a charter school in Newark founded by Essex County Democratic power broker Steve Adubato.
