'WTC cross' to be moved today

Thursday, October 05, 2006

The last iconic remnant from the World Trade Center superstructure will be moved out of Ground Zero today.

The iron cross formed by the last standing beams from the Trade Center complex will be taken down at 7 a.m. in preparation for a move to St. Peter's Church near Ground Zero, at 2 p.m.

The Port Authority plans to conduct a small ceremony to mark the transfer, after which the cross will be placed on a flatbed truck and taken from Ground Zero to the church.

It will be reinstalled there, until its permament home at the WTC memorial is completed at Ground Zero.

The two cast-iron beams left in the shape of a cross after the collapse of the Twin Towers were hoisted onto a 40-foot foundation on October 4th, 2001 and quickly became one of the best-known symbols of the site.
