Liz Cho is Back; Taxi Strike looming?

Tuesday, September 04, 2007

There's always news -- that's why we're in business. But today what's top-of-mind here, at least so far and pending some big catastrophe, is the return of my partner.

Liz Cho has been on maternity leave - a wonderfully magical time -- and today she comes back. We are thrilled. I am thrilled. I've worked with many co-anchors, and some of them became good friends. But none closer than Liz.

I have missed her; but any pain has been more than overwhelmed by the joy for Liz and her husband Evan ("the Cobra" on the tennis court).

So we welcome Liz back as she enters this new phase of her life, with a baby at home and now juggling her two careers -- motherhood and journalism.

Now onto the 11 p.m. newscast -- and thousands of New York City cabbies are threatening to strike for two days, beginning tomorrow. They don't like the new credit card options for passengers (they say their tips have dropped considerably because of the machines) and they don't much like the GPS devices, which they say is like "Big Brother" to monitor their whereabouts.

There are many who wonder what's the big deal with that, but there are indeed thousands of taxi drivers who are upset. And they're going to walk off their jobs tomorrow, leaving a severe shortage of cabs in the City. Jim Dolan is on the story for us tonight.

Also at 11, we'll have the latest on adventurer Steve Fossett. The world aviation record holder has been missing since last night, when he was seen taking off from the Hilton Ranch in Nevada in a single-engine Citabria Super Decathlon.

Search teams are now looking in the rugged terrain of western Nevada.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Marvell Scott (in for Scott Clark) with the night's sports. I hope you can join Liz and me, tonight at 11.
