November 3, 2010 (WABC) -- What a mess. Could it be that a bit of Florida has suddenly plunked itself in Bridgeport, Connecticut? You'd think it had, what with the political kerfuffle over the state's election of a new Governor.
We still don't know who has won the race, and we don't know when we will. Quick background: Bridgeport, and who knows why (was it to save money?) printed viewer ballots than they should have. And so when the polls closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday night, hundreds hadn't yet voted. Officials made copies of the ballots - and that has been challenged - but not nearly enough to satisfy the demand.
So the Mayor asked for and got an extension to keep the polls open till 10 p.m.
For some reason, those ballots have been problematic in the count. You could get mental whiplash keeping track of all this. First it seemed that the Republican Tom Foley had defeated the Democrat Dan Malloy. Then Malloy was unofficially declared the winner, although Foley refused to concede. Then the Associated Press last night claimed it re-counted the votes and it showed Foley with the lead.
Not looking so good here is the Connecticut Secretary of the State (yes, that's what the title is& "the State", not just "State"). She has apparently not been able to come up with a final count yet, despite pledges to do that.
As we say, a real mess. We're following the developments, tonight at 11.
Also at 11, New York City boasts it has great water - and it apparently is. But the delivery system in the City's buildings for that water is not so great. And now a study has found elevated levels of lead in a couple of hundred older buildings. So what can you do to protect yourself and your family? We're on the story, at 11.
And we're looking into whether you need or don't need a travel agent anymore, with the Internet making it so easy to book your own travel these days. The answer may surprise you, as our Kemberly Richardson discovered.
We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast (how much longer will this rain last?) and Scott Clark with the night's sports. I hope you can join Liz Cho and me, tonight at 11.
