Made in China

July 12, 2012 (WABC) -- Man oh man - talk about stirring up a hornet's nest! Last night, ABC's World News reported that the opening ceremony outfits of the U.S. Olympic team members were made in China.

It's an interesting and somewhat ironic twist to the nationalistic bent of the games, which open in London on July 27. But the response from Congress - and others - to this revelation seems over-the-top.

I know ABC News has done much over the past year to tout the benefits of "Made in America." And as reporters Sharon Alfonsi and David Muir have pointed out time and again, most of the stuff in Americans' homes aren't made here. They're made abroad.

So let's take a close look at the televisions and smartphones and computers in the offices of those representatives who are now calling for the U.S. team to change its wardrobe.

Hey, don't get me wrong. Great idea having everything made in this country. Let's put people back to work, and build things here. I suspect most Americans would not be too happy about the goodies they've become accustomed to suddenly doubling or tripling in price.

I'm just sayin'.

Tonight at 11, we'll have reaction to the Made In China Not America Olympic debate.

Also at 11, we're in Scranton, where a scathing report was released today - eviscerating former officials at Penn State University for putting the interests of their vaulted football team over the interests of the kids who were sexually abused by the team's former assistant coach, Jerry Sandusky.

The report, by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, paints a horrible picture of how administrators - including former head coach Joe Paterno, who died of lung cancer last year - covered up the sex abuse they knew about.

While Penn State is the target, the bigger message goes out to sports programs across the country - their interests never should supersede the kind of legal and moral wrongdoing that went, the sexual abuse of children.

We'll also have any breaking news of the night, plus Meteorologist Lee Goldberg's AccuWeather forecast, and Laura Behnke (in for Rob Powers) with the night's sports. I hope you can join Sade Baderinwa and me, tonight at 11.
