October 18, 2009 -- Fitness experts have long been concerned that while many adults spend hours exercising, many kids spend hours playing video games.
Denise McNeal of Peer Power Fitness says, "They're exercising their thumbs very well, however we want to get the whole body moving."
The reason McNeal's Peer Power Fitness Center is one where the kids will still be playing video games, but they've got to work at it... part of a growing fitness trend called exer-gaming.
"It combines exercising and gaming. The game bikes are really cool because in order for them to play they have to be peddling. So, they don't even realize they're working out. It is an emerging trend and it's really geared for kids."Now, the games are as challenging as the workout is and the best part is they can be enjoyed by adults as well as kids.
"That's the whole idea," says McNeal. "We want to get the families involved working out together. We have adult equipment as well as the kid size equipment. Or they can all play together. That's what we love to see... the kids out having fun with it and the adults doing their same thing."
On often familiar arcade equipment as well as variations that for adults can make for a surprisingly challenging workout.
"They get lost in the game and they're sweating, they'll be on there for an hour and they're having a great time playing their games."
An experience that will have grown ups unlikely to ever complain again about their kids spending too much time playing video games..
I'm Don Polec, getting a workout in my world.
